Freescale, Mocana Join to Secure Next Generation of Connected Devices

By Spencer D. Chin

Freescale Semiconductor (News - Alert) and Mocana have formed a relationship to offer Freescale’s networking customers exceptional encryption performance. Freescale plans to integrate Mocana’s Device Security Framework with most PowerQUICC II, PowerQUICC II Pro and PowerQUICC III encryption enabled products.

Mocana supplies industry-leading infrastructure software solutions that ensure wired and wireless devices, networks and services perform and scale with the utmost security. Combined with Freescale’s PowerQUICC devices, the Mocana technology is ideal for securing home, office and media gateways, Ethernet routers and switches, wireless LAN (WLAN) equipment, network attached storage, industrial control, line cards, imaging equipment and other connected devices.

Mocana’s Device Security Framework comprises several embeddable modules that secure next generation devices and services. The relationship between Mocana and Freescale enables customers to purchase a comprehensive security package from one vendor, thereby significantly reducing costs and speeding time-to-market.

“Our goal in collaborating with Freescale is to provide the most competitive, comprehensive embeddable security solution on the market and further establish Mocana as the go-to solution provider for the world’s top manufacturers,” said Adrian Turner, chief executive and president of Mocana, in a statement. “By implementing Mocana’s Device Security Framework, Freescale’s customers can expect significant capability enhancements while meeting the most stringent security standards.”

Benchmarking tests using Freescale’s MPC8555E PowerQUICC III processor with Mocana Acceleration Harness 2.0 and Mocana SSL achieved throughput performance in excess of 500 megabits per second, with extremely low CPU utilization -- exceeding Freescale’s predicted performance model for its own device.

“Incorporating Mocana’s software offers our customers outstanding encryption performance with the convenience of a single-source solution,” said Chekib Akrout, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Networking Systems Division.

The solution ships with libraries that integrate with existing real time operating systems. Mocana binary code will support the most popular embedded operating systems, making integration seamless and reducing the risk of developer-introduced vulnerabilities.

The Mocana Device Security Framework modules are optimized for Freescale processors. These modules include the Acceleration Harness, SSL Server, SSL Client, SSH Server, SSH Client, IPsec/IKEv1 and IKEv2, and Certificate Management Client. Each protocol implementation has been built from the ground up for embedded systems and is open standards-based, full featured, RFC-compliant and multi-core friendly.

Freescale’s PowerQUICC technology is the industry's most popular communications processor architecture, used by more than 500 equipment manufacturers worldwide and the solution of choice for more than 5,000 communications and networking system designs.
