On the Cutting Edgewater

By Cindy Waxer
TMCnet Contributing Editor

These days, companies can’t afford to take any chances when it comes to the delivery of IP-based voice and video. Enter Edgewater Networks. The California-based company develops products that ensure the secure and reliable delivery of IP-based voice and video for both service providers and enterprises.

For example, EdgeMarc Series devices provide a SIP, MGCP or H.323 VoIP aware NAT/Firewall, VoIP survivability, passive call quality monitoring and traffic management. EdgeConnect managed Power over Ethernet switches provide simplified administration, remote configuration and QoS for converged voice, video and data networks. EdgeProtect Series provide NOC based security and protect critical voice and video infrastructure elements from network based attacks. And the EdgeView VoIP Support System is used to proactively monitor call quality (including VoIP MOS), simplify configuration of Edgewater Networks' devices and many IP phones and troubleshoot and fix issues that negatively affect call quality.

But quality isn’t the only concern to today’s service providers and enterprises. Seamless and simply VoIP administration, configuration and management also count among IT professionals’ top priorities. Fortunately, Edgewater Networks can help.

Says Dave Martin, Edgewater Networks’ vice president of marketing: “VoIP setup, installation and support are the primary considerations when choosing a set of VoIP solutions. The Edgewater product line, from our edge routers to the core support platform, is dedicated to delivering VOIP in the most efficient manner possible. For example, Edgewater Networks Plug ‘n Dial capability automates the setup of many of the industry’s best VoIP products to reduce installation time from hours to minutes.”

As for the IP industry’s future, Martin says that “the further adoption of managed IP video” is likely to result “in a need for solutions that enable true converged networking. Consequently, Edgewater sees a need to deliver a high quality, application-aware experience no matter what's coming across the access link.”
