VoIP Solutions Provider GENBAND's 8000 Converged Media Gateway Leads in Port Shipments

The GENBAND (News - Alert) 8000 Converged Media Gateway has been named the world’s leader in port shipments for the calendar year 2006 by analyst firm Infonetics Research.

A flagship product for GENBAND, the 8000 Converged Media Gateway (News - Alert), which is used to deliver VoIP over converged wireless/wireline networks, reportedly shipped a record 7 million ports during 2006. Part of the company’s family of next generation IP gateways and multi-media application platforms, the 8000 is a high-density, feature-rich, multi-fabric media gateway that allows services to be switched in native modes or between IP, ATM and TDM via provision-able features, functions, modules and cards.

The highly-scalable 8000 supports OSPF and MPLS IP voice networks, in addition to circuit switched TDM networks. It is said to reduce capital and operational costs for carriers migrating from 2G to 3G mobile voice networks. It is also said to deliver improved voice quality compared to competing VoIP gateway solutions.

“The 8000 media gateway has shown a progressive increase in port shipments over the last three years,” said Stephane Teral, principal analyst for Infonetics Research, in a press release. “Key to this growth has been the 8000’s flexibility as both a high-density wireless and wireline media gateway. By year-end 2006, the 8000 Converged Media Gateway which had been the North American market leader quarter-over-quarter throughout 2006 became the worldwide market leader.”

The 8000 Converged Media Gateway has reportedly shipped more than 20 million ports since it was first introduced. Now with billions of in-service minutes, it has proven to be a valuable component for service providers deploying next-generation wireline and mobile networks.

GENBAND, a developer of next-generation IP gateways and application solutions, made news in April when it announced that it had closed the purchase of Tekelec’s (News - Alert) Switching Solutions Group.

The two companies announced in March that they had entered into a definitive agreement in which GENBAND would purchase Tekelec’s equity interests in Santera Systems LLC and Taqua (News - Alert), Inc. and certain business assets of Tekelec’s former Vocal Data Inc. subsidiary. The transaction was completed on April 21.

As part of the acquisition of Tekelec’s Switching Solutions Group, GENBAND acquired the Tekelec 7000 product line (formally Taqua). In an effort to provide the optimum long-term sales, marketing, R&D and support to existing and prospective customers, GENBAND is spinning out the T7000 business to the new Taqua. Many of the new management and employees have been affiliated with Taqua since its inception in 1999.
