Centillium Communications has announced a new gateway solution integrating optical and VoIP technologies. The Optical Services Gateway platform enables vendors to offer and integrated services gateway solution to residential and business customers. The gateway enables service providers to deliver voice, video and data service capabilities over their passive optical network (PON) access infrastructures.

The new gateway combines Centillium’s Mustang Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) system chip with the VoIP, routing and security capabilities of the company’s Atlanta product family. The chipsets are integrated with a comprehensive software package, enabling vendors to develop enhanced optical network units that allow service providers to roll out triple-play capabilities. A common management interface also simplifies provisioning and monitoring of the gateway.

The Optical Services Gateway platform leverages Centillium’s core broadband technologies, including high-speed network access of optical products and enterprise-level security and encryption for voice and data. The gateway offers direct connectivity to IPTV (News - Alert), HDTV, video on demand and other network services. The platform is also supported by a development and evaluation kit that features a multi-functional customer evaluation board, reference designs and a software package.

"As PON rollouts quickly pick up steam around the world, equipment manufacturers and service providers alike want to be sure that the platforms they choose will have the integrated flexibility to confidently deliver multiple high-revenue services with simple and familiar provisioning and management tools," said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, Broadband and IPTV, Infonetics Research. "Centillium's new platform helps future-proof ONUs by integrating support for the must-have features of any PON deployment."

"Centillium's new Optical Services Gateway platform offers us an integrated solution that encompasses technologies that once required multiple vendors to provide," said K.B. Kim, vice president of Product Management at Corecess. "It helps us achieve faster time-to-market with lower bill of material costs and development expenses. With Centillium's unique solution, we are enabling service providers to roll out advanced broadband services like VoIP and IPTV quickly to generate more revenues and accelerate the return on investment in their optical access infrastructure."

"Centillium has leaped ahead of the competition when it comes to making broadband services easy for our customers to deploy, and our newest gateway platform is a testament to this fact," said Didier Boivin, vice president of marketing for Centillium Communications. "Today's announcement marks the first in a series of solutions that will help expedite the delivery of advanced services to market, ultimately helping optical developers bring multimedia capabilities to detached homes, apartments and businesses. With our new solutions, we are helping to increase return on investment across the broadband customer chain."
