IMS Week-in-Review: Pre-holiday Edition, December 11-21, 2006

By Mae Kowalke
TMCnet Associate Editor

Welcome to the pre-holiday edition of IMS Week-in-Review, bringing you all the IP Multimedia Subsystem news that’s fit to print from Dec. 11 through Dec. 21. And a tastier assortment of IMS news items you’d be hard pressed to find.

In this edition are reports from Polycom (News - Alert), Occam Networks, IP Unity, Shift Networks, Atreus Systems, Cedar Point Communications, BEA Systems (News - Alert), IMS Forum, and Seagull Software. Enjoy!

We’ll start with Polycom’s Dec. 11 announcement that it is developing solutions that support the IMS architecture and standards. More specifically, the company is creating IMS-ready conference and collaboration services aimed at enterprises, small businesses, and consumers.

The new services will be available starting sometime during the first half of 2007.

Also on Dec. 11, Occam Networks launched the latest release of its OccamOS solution, which now incorporates a truly carrier-class SIP implementation. By providing an easy transition from Class 5 t6o SIP softswitches, Occam’s solution enables BLCs and ONTs to act as media gateways using IMS architecture.

Moving along to Dec. 14, the big news of the day was the announcement from IP Unity (a provider of carrier-grade media servers and multimedia applications) announcement that it is acquiring Glenayre Messaging (a next-generation messaging solutions company).

The $25 million deal, expected to close within 30 days, will create one of the largest independent suppliers of messaging systems and IMS solutions designed to serve the needs of both incumbent and next-generation wireline/wireless carriers, IP Unity said.

Also Dec. 14, integrated VoIP switching provider Cedar Point Communications (News - Alert) announced that its SAFARI C3 system is being used by Belgian service provider VOO to deliver telephone services to CATV and Internet customers.

SAFARI C3 is an integrated, carrier-class VoIP switch that provides seamless evolution to SIP-based features and IMS architecture.

On Monday, BEA Systems said it has completed interoperability testing between its WebLogics SIP Server and IMS service platforms from NEC (News - Alert), Huawei Technologies, and Convergin. The result is that equipment providers can combine solutions from the companies involved to deliver fixed-mobile convergence and telco SOA for pre-IMS and IMS networks.

Also Monday, IMS Forum announced a series of events planned to run through 2008, under the title IMS Plugfest. The events are designed to promote interoperability between applications, services, components and end-user devices running on IMS network. The first event kicks off January 15 at the University of New Hampshire’s InterOperability Lab in Durham, New Hampshire.

Finally, Seagull Software this week launched its LegaSuite IMS Gateway (News - Alert) product, a new addition to the company’s LegaSuite platform. The solution provides a new method of integrating directly to IMS transactions without requiring IMS Connect or other mainframe software.

That’s it for this time, folks. IMS Week-in-Review returns January 5 to ring in the New Year with more IMS news. Until then, have a very safe and happy holiday season!
