Responding to an avalanche of customer requests, PC maker Dell (News - Alert) reiterated an earlier promise to offer Linux as an alternative to Windows on its personal computers, according to several online reports.
Dell first revealed in February it was going to preload Linux on its PCs on its IdeaStorm blog. Dell has been getting positive feedback on offering Linux in recent weeks, prompting the company to make the move to be the first major PC vendor offering the operating system.
"We will expand our Linux support beyond our existing servers and Precision workstation line," the company was quoted as saying on the IdeaStorm blog . "Our first step in this effort is offering Linux pre-installed on select desktop and notebook systems."
In coming weeks, Dell will reportedly release details on which systems it will offer Linux on, testing and certification efforts, and the Linux distribution or distributions that will be available.
Seeking to improve profitability and fight off competitors such as HP, Dell has stepped up efforts to revamp its product offerings, much of it prompted by the return of founder Michael Dell to the company’s day-to-day management.
According to results of a customer Linux poll on its IdeaStorm blog, Dell reported that over 70 percent of survey respondents said they would use a Dell system with a Linux OS for both home and office use and said they wanted a choice between both notebook and desktop offerings.
