BT Diamond IP Unveils IPControl Version 3.0

By Anuradha Shukla

BT Diamond IP has released IPControl version 3.0, available on software and Sapphire appliances. The release features layer 2 switch discovery, subnet reclaim and IPv6 sparse allocation, offered in an IP address management (IPAM) solution.

“Many of our customers would like to incorporate layer 2 into the powerful layer 3 discovery and planned versus actual exception reporting in IPControl,”said Michael Dooley, VP operations, BT Diamond IP, in a press release.

“Our R&D team responded to this need in version 3.0, as well as incorporating subnet reclaim and IPv6 sparse allocation, making IPControl the most comprehensive IPAM solution available today,” he added.

IPControl version 3.0 integrates multilayer discovery in order to query the network. The integration enables IP inventory assurance and identifies potential access control violations. The information required by IP managers is consolidated by Layer 2 switch discovery enabling them to easily identify occupants of given switch ports and IP addresses as well as potential rogue devices.

According to Jim Tiller, chief security officer, BT INS, security managers can use the new IPControl layer 2 discovery feature to validate their NAC admission policies by periodically auditing users' locations by linking layer 3 IP addresses to layer 2 addresses and switch ports.

“And when a security alert is triggered for a particular IP address, this linkage in IPControl enables identification of the culprit in seconds - an essential capability for improving reaction time to unauthorized access to the network,” explained Tiller.

IPControl 3.0 has also introduced automated and manual IP address and subnet reclaim and advanced IPv6 address management. The former maximizes address utilization efficiencies while providing further automation and time savings, and the latter enables automated ip6.arpa domain creation, AAAA/PTR resource record automation and three selectable block allocation methods: best-fit, sparse and random.

The software also has enhanced administrator access controls for administrator delegation and for specific block sizes per block type, enabling scoping of access and accountability.
