Veraz Networks (News - Alert) has announced advances to its distributed switching solution that increase the deployment and management efficiency of multiple switching nodes.
Service providers with large national or multinational networks can use the advances in the Veraz solution to cost-effectively distribute their switching infrastructure enabling them to meet regulatory requirements, which can necessitate separate or multiple switching nodes when expanding service regionally.
Veraz solution can also preserve communication within and between regional switching centers following events of regional isolation or regional disaster by providing independent intelligence at each node in a network.
The company points out that regional switching nodes provide advantages in large national or multinational networks with heavy intra-regional traffic. This is achieved by allowing regional service and control traffic to be handled locally rather than backhauling it great distances to a central switching point.
However, the operational efficiencies of regional switching nodes are negated if the regional nodes need to be managed individually. With Veraz's solution regional traffic is handled without backhaul
and at the same time all the switching nodes are managed centrally as a single switch.
This enables routing
updates, software upgrades, or the addition of new services to be executed centrally rather than individually at each node.
“The advantages of distributed systems continue to become more and more evident, but those advantages are predicated on centralized management,” said Doug Sabella, CEO of Veraz in a statement to the press.
Sabella continued: “Veraz's unique architecture makes it possible to simultaneously benefit from centralized management and distributed intelligence. This provides not only the benefits of operational efficiencies, but also increased resiliency in the network as well.”
The Veraz ControlSwitch leverages a distributed architecture based on Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) computing platforms rather than proprietary hardware, which maximizes the cost-effectiveness of multiple switching node deployments.
Server consolidation is accomplished by taking advantage of the latest advances in server virtualization and multi-core systems and enables Veraz NGN
and IMS switching nodes to cost effectively scale down to a pair of COTS servers.
The effective range of Veraz ControlSwitch regional switching nodes is thus expanded.
