VocalTec Communications has just been awarded with the US patent number 7,142,506 entitled "Method and apparatus for transmitting packets." The patent covers a method for transmitting multimedia packets over a packet switch network, by dynamically changing the bit rate based on bandwidth availability.

The VoIP solution provider has other 11 patents reportedly issued by the United States Office which cover VoIP, media and network processing techniques, Fax over IP handling, and other types of call management and multimedia communication methods over packet based networks.

According to the patent specification: "There is disclosed an apparatus and methods for adjusting of bit rate transmission in a communication network by monitoring the state of the network, detecting the state of the network and transmitting a multimedia call over the network in accordance with the network state detected. In accordance with the invention, the network state is monitored with the bit rate adjusted in accordance with the network state detected. This results in a multimedia call with greatly improved audio quality."

"I am pleased that the United States Patent and Trademark Office have granted us this additional patent to be added to our patent portfolio," stated VocalTec's CTO Rami Amit in a statement released on Tuesday. "This patent grant further solidifies our position as a leader in Voice over IP solutions and acknowledges our innovation as the first implementers of products in the field."

VocalTec was recently involved in a deal with Jordan-based carrier AmmanCall to deploy the VocalTec Essentra system for trunking, peering and services on its next generation network.

The agreement called for AmmanCall to deploy VocalTec's Trunking Solution, Essentra CX, an SIP-based media gateway controller; VocalTec's Peering system Essentra EX, a peering manager that facilitates peering between SIP and/or H.323 networks and VocalTec's Services system, Essentra BAX, an application server that enables the delivery of residential and hosted enterprise VoIP services.
