US LEC to Connect Florida Rock's 120 Locations

By Johanne Torres

IP, data and voice service provider US LEC was tapped by ready-mixed concrete seller Florida Rock Industries as its communications partner to implement a combined data networking and disaster recovery system.

Under a new contract, US LEC will connect 120 of Florida Rock's field locations through a centralized data center and the company's Jacksonville, Fla. headquarters.

"We needed a reliable and economical solution that allowed us to benefit from the newest technologies," said Florida Rock's CIO Roger Ferenbaugh in a statement released on Thursday.

"US LEC offered Florida Rock all of the elements we needed for superior, disaster-resistant performance, large, scalable bandwidth, next-generation IP-based networking services and a dedicated team assigned to service our account."

Specifically, US LEC will offer Florida Rock with MPLS VPN and Ethernet Local Loop products; as well as with additional components including a disaster recovery and business continuity system; and remote network access for road warriors.

US LEC's MPLS VPN will provide Florida Rock a "meshed" network design for better reliability over traditional "hub and spoke" systems. With the new system in place, Florida Rock will be able to prioritize traffic traveling over its MPLS VPN network.

Florida Rock will also co-locate its Disaster Recovery (DR) site at a US LEC data center. It will include a set of fail-over ready systems, which will be updated from a primary site via the US LEC MPLS backbone.

US LEC made news back in May when it struck a deal with IP Applications of Vancouver, Canada to resell US LEC's MegaPOP Dial Internet services to North American dial-up access customers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. IP Applications also provides ISPs with back-office support including applications, systems and support.

"IP Applications' dial-up customers require a solutions provider that can help them evolve in a competitive business climate," stated IP Applications' executive vice president of sales and marketing Darren Dumba back then. "With MegaPOP Dial Internet services, IP Applications can offer a competitively- priced service to help customers grow without sacrificing service quality or reliability."
