By Johanne Torres

AT&T today announced an extension to its suite of online PC, laptop and server backup services for consumers and small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs)—with the introduction of AT&T (News - Alert) Online Vault and AT&T Remote Vault.

AT&T Online Vault is a Web-based PC backup service that stores user data at a remote location. The service is being marketed as a way to protect financial records, digital photos, music and other important documents. Online Vault frees users from CD burning or moving files to external hard drives.

Online Vault is currently available for $5.95 monthly for the first two gigabytes of storage space. For each additional gigabyte used, the cost is an additional $2 a month, not to exceed $17.95 a month.

Remote Vault is a similar service geared toward business customers as a way to protect their files offsite at a centrally managed data center, where they can be remotely accessed and copied. AT&T’s Internet Data Centers feature redundant, uninterruptible power sources, fire suppression and air-conditioning systems, and 24/7 network management and monitoring. Government-standard 128-bit advanced encryption standard (AES) is used to transmit all data.

Remote Vault lets businesses can have their data stored offsite for up to four months or longer, if needed. For PCs and laptops, the service is available for a standard monthly fee of $6.95 for the first gigabyte of storage space and $2 per gigabyte thereafter. Pricing for servers runs between $6 and $12 per gigabyte, depending on the retention schedule selected and amount of data protected.
