TELUS Becomes First Canadian Telecom Provider to Certified for Cisco TelePresence

By Raju Shanbhag
TMCnet Contributing Editor

TELUS (News - Alert) has announced it is the first Canadian telecommunications provider to achieve both the Cisco TelePresence Connection Certification and the Cisco TelePresence Authorized Technology Provider Certification. These certifications recognize TELUS’ capability to deploy and support Cisco (News - Alert) TelePresence, as well as having the network sophistication to deliver an optimal telepresence experience.

TELUS delivers a highly scalable and highly secure solution by utilizing the Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture and innovative technology. The Cisco TelePresence system creates ‘in-person’ experiences between people, places, and events. Cisco TelePresence creates the experience of being in the same room with remote participants, whether they are down the street or around the world. This is achieved by delivering life-size images, via ultra-high-definition video (1080p) and spatial audio within a specially designed environment.

Nitin Kawale, senior vice president, Cisco Canada said in a company press release, “Cisco TelePresence provides an unprecedented ‘in-person’ meeting experience that enables companies to improve business efficiency and gives them the potential to transform their businesses through faster and richer collaboration, instant access to expertise, and better cross-cultural communication. To help ensure the extremely high-quality experience of Cisco TelePresence meetings, Cisco set up a rigorous accreditation process.”

TELUS has also implemented Cisco TelePresence internally in its Vancouver and Toronto offices. The company expects to reduce travel, assist in meeting environmental goals and improve employee efficiency and customer communication with this implementation.

The Cisco TelePresence Connection certification is based on industry standards, with regard to staffing, verification, processes and tools. The process goes beyond static measurements of network performance and is audited annually via third-party verification.
