Uganda giant chases telecom

Mar 08, 2010 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A deadline of 22 March 2010 has been set for small VoIP provider HiTech Telecom to file its defence in the Federal Court of Australia. It is being sued for $A63,000 by Uganda Telecom, the African nation's leading telco, over allegedly outstanding bills for switching services. The dispute dates back to 2008, when Uganda Telecom also attempted to resolve the matter by arbitration in Uganda's courts system. The move to the Australian one is enabled by both nations being signatories to the UN Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.
