Internet access providers prepared to invest in Deutsche Telekom's new VDSL network (Internetanbieter offen fur VDSL-Beteiligung)

(Financial Times Deutschland Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Two German internet access providers, Freenet and United Internet, have offered to contribute to the cost of setting up the new high-speed VDSL glass fibre network that is planned by Deutsche Telekom, the German telecoms group. Deutsche Telekom is hoping to create a network in Germany's 50 largest cities, and estimates that the cost will total around 3bn euros.

The internet access providers say that they are prepared to contribute to the costs in proportion to their current share in the market for internet access in Germany. United Internet wishes to contribute 500m euros, while Freenet says that it will pay around 200m euros. Deutsche Telekom says that it cannot consider this until it has received a formal offer, and has not indicated whether or not it is prepared to allow third parties to become involved.
