Foursquare Celebrates Staggering Growth

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Foursquare (News - Alert) is enjoying significant success and according to a TechCrunch report, is celebrating some staggering growth stats. The company shared in an infographic that it has hit six million registered users. Even more astonishing is the company’s growth in check-ins: 3,400 percent for a total of 381,576,305 check-ins in 2010.

In terms of growth, Foursquare seems to have the market cornered as it only took the location-based social network a month and a half to add another million users. The largest event by check-ins for Foursquare so far was the Rally to Restore Sanity, boasting 30,525 check-ins. The company’s infographic also provides statistics on popular venues according to category, and most popular brands on the network. At the top of the list: MTV and Bravo.

Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley (News - Alert) announced at Le Web last December that the company is seeing two million check-ins per day and adding 25,000 new users every day. Crowley said then that users split up geographically between 60 percent U.S., and 40 percent international, and the average Foursquare check-in user will check in three to four times per day. Just under three weeks of a photo uploading feature launch, the network hit one million photos shared.

Facebook wasn’t happy with Foursquare’s success in a sector that should be dominated by the social networking giant. As a result, Facebook (News - Alert) launched its own Facebook Places. This launch didn’t put much of a dent in Foursquare’s growth, and the company continues to accelerate. It certainly helps that Foursquare continues to add new partners, features and a compelling product, and this most recent growth demonstrates users are not yet tired of this platform.

In other Foursquare news, TMCnet reported that the company partnered with Vlingo, a provider of intelligent voice applications, to enable users to leverage Foursquare by speaking to their phone. This new feature is designed for Android (News - Alert) users who can now speak to their phone to check in, connect with their friends, or shout out an update on Foursquare.

Foursquare has also partnered with USA TODAY for a new service. The excitement surrounding the new partnership is the result of the 250 tips from USA TODAY travel experts loaded into the population location-based social network. The travel advice comes from the publication’s “10 Great Places” feature, which relies on information from local experts, authors and celebrities to provide the inside scoop on top destinations.
