Mozambican operator mCel has selected Ericsson (

Alert) to supply products required for the expansion and upgrading of its Mobile Packet Backbone Network solution (Mobile-PBN).
Ericsson’s Mobile-PBN solution includes Redback’s SmartEdge products which will also be supplied as per the contract. These are expected to increase network capacity besides being able to mange increased traffic.
Redback’s SmartEdge routers offer IP

infrastructure which can accommodate broadband packet data traffic growth and offer transport for mCel’s existing Ericsson Mobile Softswitch solution.
Deployment of the network has begun and is expected to be completed by mid 2008. The companies assure full telecom-quality IP transport for any traffic and the ability for operators to launch reliable new services rapidly.
Mohamed Mussa, Director of Technology at mCel, said, “Ericsson’s technology leadership and end-to-end capabilities will allow mCel to meet growing subscriber numbers quickly and cost-effectively and to provide a competitive edge through the introduction of a range of popular, high-quality multimedia services to our customers.”

This contract is among many Ericsson and Redback joint ventures. Ericsson confirmed that it is now supplying Redback equipment to 65 carriers in over 45 countries.
