Report: Metro Ethernet Equipment Sales Jumped 27 percent in 2007, to $13 Billion
By Michael Dinan TMCnet Editor Metro Ethernet
The growth is expected to continue at double-digit rates for the next four years, according to Infonetics Research’s (News - Alert) “Metro Ethernet Equipment” report.
The Campbell, California-based firm’s co-founder, Michael Howard (News - Alert), said the majority of access and aggregation equipment in 2012 will be based on Internet protocol, Ethernet and wavelength division multi-plexing – not synchronous optical networks
“In 2007 and especially in 2008, we’re seeing more carriers using Ethernet, and more carriers conducting interoperability tests of all sorts of Ethernet products for residential broadband, business connections, and mobile backhaul,” said Howard, the new report’s principal researcher.
The report calls for routers and carrier Ethernet switches, Ethernet over DSL
Other highlights of the report include: Sales of copper and fiber Ethernet access devices will nearly quadruple from 2007 to 2011; Worldwide metro Ethernet equipment ports, which hit 40.5 million in 2007, will grow quickly through 2011, dominated by VDSL Ethernet 10/100M and EPON
