6WIND, specializing in network software solutions, announced a new solution suitable for mid-range applications. This will include 2 to 4 cores for the provision of high L2/L3 performance for pure Linux systems.
The solution is based on Fast Path architecture, and the 6WINDGate EDS (

This makes it independent of Multi-Core Executive Environment (MCEE). It is most suitable for equipment manufacturers and chipset vendors who use multi-core based architectures for designing applications.
The market for applications needing multi-cores will increase in the future and 6WIND’S 6WINDGate software architecture will enable fast and simple designing of applications upon multi-core based equipment. This also brings cost down greatly
It offers over 1 Mpps forwarding per core for Intel (

Eric Carmès, CEO of 6WIND, said, “We’ve seen a number of customer successes with our middleware-style solution that demystifies the complexities of designing applications upon multi-core based equipment. The addition of 6WINDGate EDS to our portfolio nicely completes our ability to provide solutions for any multi-core based equipment, whether a telecommunications gateway or home gateway.”
6WIND software helps equipment manufacturers and chipset providers by supplying a solution to simplify multi-core designing. It reduces hurdles associated with working within the MCEE.
6WIND software incorporates dual-IP

Control Plane protocols, Slow Path and Fast Path Data Plane modules which include IPv4-IPv6 routing, security, QoS, filtering, multicast, mobility, IPv4-IPv6

transition, XML-based management, with continuous synchronization between all planes. Beside the Fast Path and Control Plane can be made modular according to customer requirements.
The 6WINDGate EDS software includes Slow Path and Control Plane enabled within Linux SMP with the former processed within the Linux kernel module. The protocols are split between Fast Path/Slow Path/Control Plane which is extended with Fast Path support. Also application and Fast Path share cores.
6WINDGate EDS includes pre-made networking and application development building blocks. It allows for an open framework for easy integration of in-house or third party applications avoiding hardware lock-in for equipment manufacturers like those of telecommunications equipment, enterprise gateways, security appliances and customer premise equipment (CPE).
