Artificial Intelligence to Ape Human Agents, Dupe E-Commerce Customers

By Raju Shanbhag

Officials from Intellichat said today that they’ve come up with Virtual Sales Agents trick e-commerce visitors into thinking they are human by having seamless chat conversations with the visitors.

The agents also provide answers to their questions and persuade them to sign up by offering them small discounts, Intellichat officials say.

In their first two months of Intellichat running the virtual agents handled over three million chats, and by the start of June 2008, they hit the 44 million mark, according to the company.

Company officials say that Intellichat will interact with users, without them ever knowing it’s a virtual agent. To complete the act of disguise, the virtual sales agent will use of human agent pictures on the chat windows and delayed typing which is all part of the illusion that the user is speaking with a real live person, company officials say.

The company says this will be mainly used as a sales tool to increase the sales conversion rate of client’s Web site. To convert the visitors into customers, officials say, a special last minute discount is offered as an incentive. Intellichat has been successful as the every clients’ agents are programmed bespoke for their own Web site, catering for the client’s needs and totally customizable to their wishes.

Nick Baker, marketing director at Intellichat, said, “When Intellichat was first launched we never expected it would grow quite this quickly. The first specification to our technical team was a system stable enough to handle 15,000 chats a day, which to our surprise we hit in the first month and we are now hitting that figure every hour, so this project has really kept our technical team on their toes.”
