Global Crossing Streamlines Security with Help from BrightSite

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Vigilos, a developer of the BrightSite patented, remote security guard technology, has released a case study that features client Global Crossing (News - Alert), a provider of telecommunications solutions over an integrated global IP-based network.

Global Crossing sought an application that would strengthen its control and audit trails of access to its critical data infrastructure throughout the U.S. and the U.K. from its Security Command Center located in the U.K.
Vigilos was selected to provide a globally scalable and flexible security solution that would streamline security monitoring and incident response times, reduce distracting false alarms and support security personnel effectiveness.

The company’s BrightSite solution enables Global Crossing to tie their card access systems and intrusion detection systems together with existing video surveillance cameras to create visual and transactional records of every card access.

The rules capabilities of the BrightSite enables Global Crossing’s security operations staff to configure logical rules triggers from any integrated device, based on their own policies and procedures. These rules can be tailored and fine tuned and alerts are issues only when the pre-configured triggers occur.

As a result of this implementation of the BrightSite solution, Global Crossing gained better internal controls over critical data. The company gained one-stop administration of all card access across the organization by using the same cardholder records across various sites.

“Using BrightSite has enabled Global Crossing to streamline security across various locations while increasing scalability, reducing false alarms, maximizing security officer productivity and security effectiveness, and securely supporting Global Crossing's multi-billion dollar global business model and network footprint," said Global Crossing Vice President of Security, Michael Miller.

Global Crossing has also been able to reduce false alarm incidents by more than 90 percent. Now, the company’s security staff only received two to three events per site, per week, making the task of responding to events more manageable compared to its previous system.

BrightSite allows Global Crossing to seamlessly leverage secure, 24/7 real-time universal network monitoring, response, and video verification of alarms. The company’s staff can now leverage the security resources from its U.K. Security Command Center throughout their global offices.

"Global Crossing, as an international telecommunications market leader, has invested in securing its people, property and customers; providing a powerful example of how a global, multi-billion dollar company can strengthen internal controls over critical data, and achieve cost-effective, one-stop security administration across various sites," said Vigilos CEO, Clifton Sink.

Global Crossing’s core network effectively connects roughly 390 cities in more than 30 countries throughout the world. It also delivers service to approximately 690 cities in more than 60 countries and six continents around the globe. The company offers a full range of data voice and security products to roughly 40 percent of the Fortune 500, as well as 700 carriers, mobile operators and ISPs.

With the vast coverage of the Global Crossing network, the company must be able to adequately protect it from outside threats. The mere size of it presents its own challenges and the company had to lean on a provider that could not only protect the network, but provide its staff with the tools necessary to perform effective monitoring.

The BrightSite solution from Vigilos fit the needs of Global Crossing and offered the capability to allow for growth. By understanding the challenges of the system and presenting a solution that meets its growing demands, Vigilos has successfully empowered Global Crossing to continue to deliver services and focus on its plan for growth.
