Vordel 5.1 Puts Policy Control at the Heart of XML Networks
By Raju Shanbhag TMCnet Contributor Providing centralized management of SOA policies enforced by XML gateways, Vordel has introduced version 5.1 of its XML network infrastructure products. The company will look to accelerate, manage and protect XML applications with this new release.
Version 5.1 of Vordel has a policy model which covers not only Vordel XML gateways, but also identity management, network firewalls, anti-virus, and system monitoring. With the creation, rollback and deployment facilities, the Vordel version 5.1 also provides options for lifecycle policy management and role-based access to policies.
Vordel has always recognized that policies must cover many of the critical products spanning the existing IT infrastructure such as network management, identity management, anti-virus, network firewalls, registries and ESB platforms apart from covering XML gateways. The enforcement of these policies is directed by the Vordel Policy Director to a distributed network of XML gateway appliances, which provides control across the IT architecture.
The need for aggregated policy management across the IT infrastructure rises as businesses build out more complex SOA. Enterprise Architects should provide policies for performance, availability and access control that govern the role of business services. They should also demand a cost-effective approach to policy management as SOA is rolled out.
A press release by Vordel quotes market research firm, Gartner (News - Alert) stating that within the next 18 months, there will be a combination of events that will force many companies, regardless of technology maturity, to strongly consider integration and infrastructure appliances. These causes include increased XML use within IT departments, resulting in a need for accelerated parsing and extreme security measures, such as malicious code and intrusion detection. It also includes the effect of service-oriented architecture (SOA) governance technologies, resulting in quick policy enforcement for performance, availability and access control.
David McKenna, vice president of engineering with Vordel, commented, “Our powerful policy model allows our customers to take control of their SOA by creating policies which encompass not only Vordel products, but also identity-management, network monitoring, and anti-virus. By enabling the control of policies centrally at design time and managing their enforcement and monitoring at run time we permit companies to put SOA policy management at the heart of their XML networks.”
