Verimatrix Retains No. 1 Position in IPTV Content Protection

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Verimatrix has retained its global No. 1 position, as the most widely-deployed IPTV (News - Alert) content protection provider for the fifth consecutive reporting period.

Verimatrix reconfirmed its strong position in the semi-annual IPTV Market Leader Report by Multimedia Research Group (MRG). The report also classifies Verimatrix (News - Alert) as the only IPTV provider having exceptionally strong growth prospects based on the number of tier one operator deployments.

The report by MRG tracks more than 80 IPTV hardware and software vendors for six product areas. A breakdown of the four regional markets – Asia, Europe, North America and the Rest of the World – has also been provided. Currently, the services excluded by MRG are hospitality and video delivery services such as PCs and mobile phones. Verimatrix is the chosen content security provider for major systems integrator platforms like Nokia, Siemens Networks, Motorola, Sun and Ericsson (News - Alert).

According to Gary Schultz, president and principal analyst of MRG, “Verimatrix maintained its place amongst the top five content protection providers in all four regions, which is remarkable in this increasingly competitive category. Its overall number one position and solid prospects with global tier-one operator deployments give Verimatrix a significant market share.”

The Video Content Authority System (VCAS) from Verimatrix has a suite of next-generation technologies that has been independently audited and ranked as the global leader in IPTV content protection.

VCAS is part of Verimatrix’s 3-Dimensional Content Security approach for telecommunications carriers, service providers, content aggregators and resellers. This approach must provide content security on their IP networks for live broadcast and Video-On-Demand IPTV services. The content security solution eliminates the issues related to smartcard-based architectures. This is done by leveraging two-way Internet security protocols, a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) public/private key pair system and X.509 digital certificates. A downloadable security system allows for cheaper set-top box hardware. This system can be updated or renewed when required.

Tom Munro, CEO of Verimatrix, said, “Our focus on content security, extensive partner ecosystem and dedication to superior customer care has been our tenets to achieving success in IPTV, and MRG's analysis reinforces that success. IP technologies are enabling cost-effective and interactive services, which makes our IP-centric software-based expertise attractive in other pay-TV markets.”
