AMD Opteron Processors Finest Option for Virtualization

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

AMD (News - Alert) has reportedly claimed that their Quad Core Opteron processors are the optimal choice for virtualization. OEMs deploy these processors in over 37 platforms in which nine of them are designed specifically for virtualization.

“Virtualization technology is an essential solution for businesses seeking to create efficient and easy to manage data centers,” said Patrick Patla, general manager, Server and Workstation Business, AMD.

Advanced Micro Devices (News - Alert) (AMD) is a provider of processing solutions in the computing and graphics markets. They claim to drive open innovation, choice and industry growth by delivering customer-centric solutions that empower consumers and businesses.

AMD Opteron processors with Direct Connect Architecture help minimize the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architectures because everything is directly connected to the CPU. Direct Connect Architecture is claimed to deliver the best 1P, 2P, 4P, and 8P architecture for x86 computing, resulting in exceptional performance-per-watt.

Dell (News - Alert) has introduced the latest M905 PowerEdge blade server powered by Opteron and it is claimed by both AMD and Dell to be the only 16-core x86 server to support 11 tiles or 66 Virtual Machines (VM) in VMmark performance testing1. The new server is also available along with the Dell PowerEdge M805 blade and both the M905 and M805 are modeled to improve valuable datacenter real estate for enterprises by using the AMD-Virtualization (AMD-V) technology.

“Our processor technology combined with these new Dell PowerEdge servers offer a solution that can help speed mainstream virtualization adoption in the industry. We are excited that more customers now have greater choice in virtualization platforms and are able to take advantage of the performance leadership delivered by AMD’s Direct Connect Architecture,” added Patla.

“Dell is offering customers a smarter path to virtualization with its new blades and across its entire portfolio of enterprise products and services,” said Sally Stevens, director of server product marketing, Dell. “Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors with AMD-V technology have been instrumental in achieving this level of virtualization performance, especially in memory-intensive applications.”

The new PowerEdge server combines the features of Opteron’s Direct Connect Architecture and AMD’s Rapid Virtualization Indexing to radically improve virtualization performance through more efficient virtual machine memory management.

The Dell servers powered by the Quad core processors can also support VMware ESXi 3.5, Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer Dell Express Edition integrated hypervisors.
