Amino Intros Plug-In PVR Technology for IPTV Set-Top Boxes

By Niladri Sekhar Nath, TMCnet Contributor

Amino Communications (News - Alert), a developer of IPTV STB platform, introduces a Plug-In PVR facility enabling companies to enhance PVR functionality without the need for hard drive units during the initial installation.

Plug-In PVR simplifies installation and maintenance as the user can easily attach or replace the USB drive to their existing STB. This delivers better value to both customer and service provider as the cost is only incurred when users are ready to upgrade to PVR.

Operators can create offers using different drives with capability ranging from Pause-Live-TV to full PVR and optionally charge an upgrade fee to enable the feature.

“Put simply, Plug-In PVR technology means increased flexibility and reduced costs for the operator,” said Andrew Burke, CEO at Amino. “This development provides a clear upgrade path enabling consumers to benefit from falling hard drive prices and increasing capacity. This growing freedom is yet another positive enhancement to the way we watch television."

This new Plug-in PVR concept adds the AmiNET530 capability to the AmiNET130 and newly-launched AmiNET130M, a 100 percent digital, high-definition (HD) STB. Plug-In PVR is a future-proof technology designed specifically to handle this ever-changing market.

“Over the coming months, we will see the introduction of this more flexible, user-friendly, external storage solution. It is technology like this that will form the foundations of next-generation IPTV (News - Alert),” added Burke.
