UTStarcom Selects Optibase to Start First Ever IPTV Services in Sri Lanaka
By Anshu Shrivastava TMCnet Contributor Optibase announced that its advanced encoders were selected by Alameda, California-based UTStarcom (News - Alert) as part of an end-to-end integrated Internet Protocol television (IPTV) solution to Sri Lanka Telecom.
Sri Lanka Telecom is a tier-one wireline and incumbent operator. The company offers international and domestic voice, Internet and data services. In February, the company set up a subsidiary to broadcast IPTV (News - Alert) to its broadband customers.
The company said that it plans to invest $1 million in the initial launch of this IPTV unit. Sri Lanka Telecom considers IPTV as a value-added service with strategic importance in the future broadband service portfolio of the company.
It will use RollingStream advanced IPTV solution from UTStarcom, a provider of IP-based end-to-end networking solutions and services.
The RollingStream solution incorporates Optibase’s H.264 streaming platforms, to offer triple-play services. Optibase officials said that their H.264 Media Gateway (News - Alert) (MGW) 5100 encoding platforms offer a reliable streaming solution.
“Optibase is excited about gaining a stronger foothold in the significant Asian IPTV market through its growing partnership with UTStarcom,” said Udi Shani, executive vice president for sales at Optibase, in a statement.
He also said that Sri Lanaka Telecom’s selection of UTStarcom’s integrated solution based on Optibase Encoders to deliver the country’s first IPTV service is another testament to Optibase's position as a strong player in the emerging Asian IPTV markets.
The research report published by RNCOS, “Global IPTV- Market Analysis and Forecast to 2011,” predicts that the Asia-Pacific region will soon emerge as a stronger competitor, and will in time outpace the European IPTV industry.
Based in Israel, Optibase provides professional encoding, decoding, video server upload and streaming solutions for telecom operators, service providers, broadcasters and content creators. The company’s platforms enable the creation, broadband streaming and playback of high quality digital video.
In August, the company announced that Optibase and Scopus Video Networks (News - Alert) Ltd. signed a non-binding term sheet for the sale by Optibase to Scopus of Optibase's digital video and streaming business.
