Vodafone Portugal Deploys Brilliant's Solution
By Niladri Sekhar Nath, TMCnet Contributor
Vodafone Portugal has selected Brilliant Telecommunications, Inc. to deploy its IEEE (News - Alert) 1588v2-based synchronization solution for its live IP-based mobile backhaul network.
Vodafone Portugal is transforming its backhaul infrastructure from traditional leased lines to Ethernet, as a cost-efficient means of transporting increasing volumes of mobile broadband traffic. The project will initially target the cities of Lisbon and Porto, where pure metro Ethernet connectivity is being used directly over a fiber infrastructure.
“Our cellular networks require accurate synchronization signals to minimize interference among sites and to ensure optimal inter-cell handover performance,” said Miguel Martins, CTO of Vodafone Portugal. “The flexibility of the Brilliant (News - Alert) solution has proved strategically important for us as it can be used with any type of Ethernet connectivity – either self built or leased from fixed carriers. Additionally, it is independent from the transport equipment, and is capable of synchronizing future 3G IP and 4G basestations as well.”
Brilliant Telecommunications (News - Alert) is a developer of next-generation timing and synchronization solutions based in Campbell, Calif. The company will provide an end-to-end synchronization solution to Vodafone Portugal.
Brilliants C-2000, a carrier-class PRS/IEEE 1588v2 Grand Master, is used in the core nodes to provide timing to client nodes comprising the Brilliant BT (News - Alert) series product. Employing the IEEE 1588v2 standard, the BT product provides frequency and time synchronization for existing 2G and 3G basestations, as well as future 4G cellular nodes with no stringent restrictions on the quality of the IP/Ethernet backhaul infrastructure
“The collaboration with Vodafone Portugal has allowed us to develop a carrier-class PTP solution, which has evolved from the lab to readily deployable solutions by mobile carriers across the world,” said Dr. Charles Barry (News - Alert), president and CEO of Brilliant Telecommunications. “The BT client products and C-2000 Grand Masters, offer the operator a cost-effective and seamless migration path to Ethernet backhaul networks, while capitalizing on the cost and efficiencies of IP/Ethernet as bandwidth demands explode.”
