SES Company Provides DVB/ IPsys Connectivity to Africa

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

SES NEW SKIES, a SES company has announced that Satlynx, a two-way satellite broadband communication services specialist, will provide 20 Mbps on the Africa IPsys/DVB platform aboard the NSS-10 satellite at the orbital position of 322.5 degrees East.

Satlynx, a GE (General Electric) company, provides satellite communication services throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. SES NEW SKIES’ (News - Alert) service IPsys can directly connect the Points of Presence (PoPs) or customer premises of remote ISPs to the global internet backbone via satellite.

Christian Stetter, VP Sales, Satlynx finds this multi-year deal to be a great opportunity for them to secure scarce capacity over a key region for Satlynx. The agreement has enabled the company to deliver services to both their enterprise customers who are keen on doing business in Africa as well as Internet Service Providers who offer connectivity locally.

According to Nigel Gibson, regional vice president - Europe and Middle East at SES NEW SKIES, IPsys connections seamlessly deliver rich internet content to even the most remote locations at high speeds. The connections have the ability to successfully bypass all shared ground networks and associated congestion points as well as any terrestrial connectivity gaps.

Satlynx has been a valuable customer of SES NEW SKIES since 2002 and Gibson said they are honored to provide Satlynx with a full-service solution to support Africa’s rapidly expanding demand for state-of-the-art broadband connections.

The NSS-10 spacecraft delivers high-powered C-band capacity to Africa, Europe and the Americas. The spacecraft supports infrastructure needs, including internet backbone access, GSM networks, distributed enterprise access, NGO's/aid agency relief networks and government applications.

In November, SES NEW SKIES announced that Arrowhead Global Solutions has signed a multi-year agreement for 90MHz of capacity on the upcoming NSS-12 satellite in order to support U.S. government needs over the Middle East and East Africa.
