Extentech Announces New Open Source, Java-based Platform

By Vivek Naik, TMCnet Contributor

Extentech recently announced the release of ExtenXLS 360 version 1.0 (E360), the company’s Web hosted, Java-based, open source, multi-platform, and collaborative documentation server.

This new product is in the same user segment as Microsoft’s (News - Alert) Sharepoint and Google Docs, and is available in both the paid and free versions. The pricing and services offered of the paid application are competitively structured to make it attractive and suitable for business modules ranging from very small to large scale.
E360 is designed to allow Server Message Block (SMB) developers and decision makers the freedom to choose, select and utilize from a wide range of open source, standards-based documentation automated tools based on the type of platform available to work with. And all this is achieved without the constraints attached to similar vendor exclusive, Web hosted applications. SMB’s are used to establish shared access to files and serial port add-on devices and allow interaction between network nodes.
E360 is constructed such that it is technology ready to accommodate future add-ons, upgrades, and sculpting based on customer specific requirements (or customization), smoothly and by leaving untouched the original source code.
Its JavaServer Pages (JSP) Servlet application permits administrators to save relevant digital information in a designated database. Besides working with HyperText Markup Language (HTML) file type environments, the E360 is fully conversant with spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel file format, or XLS, and Open Office information formats, or XML, thus providing a spreadsheet with a well rounded and adaptable Content Management System (CMS).
E360 Collaboration Edition (E360 CE), the free version, comes with the GPLd Sheetster Web spreadsheet to manage and maintain documents securely, online and as the change occurs.
It connects to the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) – a server that allows developers simple Web-scale computing with storage and retrieval of unlimited data. It can be run as a part of a SaaS (News - Alert) online access, a server with local offline access, the other side of a firewall, or even in a Web hosted application.
Don’t forget to check out TMCnet’s White Paper Library, which provides a selection of in-depth information on relevant topics affecting the IP Communications industry. The library offers white papers, case studies and other documents which are free to registered users. Today’s featured white paper is Fixed Service Strategies for Mobile Network Operators, brought to you by Comverse (News - Alert).
