Motorola Catching Up to Alcatel-Lucent In GPON Market
By Vivek Naik TMCnet Contributor
Infonetics recently released its fourth quarterly, 2008 (Q408) report titled, “PON and FTTH Equipment and Subscribers” which analyzes the performance of companies in various forms of Passive Optical Network (PON) and Fiber To The X (FTTX), where X represents different destinations. The report claims that Gigabit PON (GPON) is a market segment that is showing fast paced growth with Alcatel-Lucent barely holding on to the number one spot as Motorola is close behind. GPON supports almost 2.5 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s) data transmission from the server to the end user for downloading, and nearly 1.3 Gbit/s for uploading. The technologies architecture has built in security and is designed to logically receive, identify and send digital information within a data link layer via large and adaptive packet sizes - which is ideal for Voice and Video over IP. The reports notes that the overall PON scenario was dominated by Mitsubishi for the fourth consecutive quarter with Fiberhome elbowing its way to the second spot in Q408. Third, fourth and fifth positions were claimed by Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), Motorola, and Tellabs respectively with each player harnessing a ten percent share of global revenue. The top positions for Ethernet PON (EPON) were still maintained by Mitsubishi and Hitachi (News - Alert). However, in the lower positions, there was significant shuffling as Sumitomo, Fiberhome, and Dasan Networks all moved to higher positions. EPON technology hinges around architecture gaining access to the physical layer through the data link layer by using packet data bursts. Inter connecting and interoperable equipment used must be compliant with the IEEE802.3 set of standards. The report declares that: FTT Home (FTTH) equipment is experiencing strong growth with PON and E-FTTH devices being the forerunners. Also, a shift from copper wiring to fibered wiring should see PON related infrastructure growing 23 percent by 2013 when compared with 2008; Q308 and Q408 PON revenue remained stable at approximately $560 million in each quarter. The reports findings were in-line with an earlier report that found trendy IP-related solutions are sustaining levels of growth that most other businesses are currently finding difficult to compete with.
