Enterasys, Siemens Deploys Network Infrastructure for Franciscan University
By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor
Enterasys and Siemens Enterprise Communications (News - Alert) have announced that the Franciscan University of Steubenville has deployed a secure network infrastructure that supports more than 22 buildings, 2,500 users and 4,000 devices on campuses in Steubenville, Ohio and Gaming, Austria.
In addition to delivering educational and operational applications, the deployment helps the university to enforce their acceptable use policies through role-based access controls for students, faculty, staff and guests. Moreover, the unified infrastructure connects badge readers, video surveillance cameras, and telephones.
Kevin Sebolt, director of the Office of Information Technology at Franciscan University finds the implementation of the joint Enterasys/Siemens (News - Alert) solution extremely useful as it has given their small operations team of two people the centralized visibility and control to help in enforcing university policies and protecting their operations.
The Enterasys (News - Alert) solution comes with advanced security features that successfully control residence hall networks and quarantine inappropriate usage. The Franciscan University is now well equipped to deal with the students that attempt using unauthorized peer-to-peer applications, rogue wireless access points or unauthorized DNS/DHCP servers as the solution ensures that these students are automatically isolated to remove any potential network availability and performance vulnerabilities. Franciscan is also able to manage Internet access and filter inappropriate content by leveraging the granular level of traffic control.
Sebolt also noted that the engineering and services teams at Enterasys and Siemens helped the University to provide better bandwidth utilization and proactively help prevent infrastructure problems.
"The cost-effective technology, standards-based interoperability, responsive support and continued innovation enable us to accomplish our goals with substantially less resources."
Enterasys is the networking division of Siemens Enterprise Communications Group. Recently, the company made headlines with the announcement that it signed a strategic business relationship with SYNNEX (News - Alert). As per the announcement, Siemens Enterprise Communications Group's entire portfolio will become flagship products offered through SYNNEX' Integrated Communications Group (ICG).
