Orange Deploys IPv6 Protocol in its MPLS IP VPN Backbone Network
By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor
Orange Business Services has deployed IP version 6 (IPv6) protocol in its MPLS IP VPN backbone designed to instigate a new generation of applications and services in the machine-to-machine (M2M) and sensors networks domains.
IPv6 is included in the innovation strategy of Orange Business Services (News - Alert) to cater to the requirements of customers who require a reliable and future-proof provider.
Integration of IPv6 by companies is important because it is essential for any application that needs several networked devices. It ensures that there will be no shortage of IP addresses. This huge address space enables new applications in machine-to-machine communication and sensor networks like energy consumption and environmental monitoring, security systems and telemedicine.
IPv6 allows enterprises to have simpler addressing which enables any device to have a unique IP address.
It is expected that IPv6 addressing will soon replace existing IP addressing which implies that enterprises have to be ready from now on for the change. Orange Business Services ensures that a single VPN can mix IPv4 and IPV6 traffic which will allow a smooth IPv6 integration.
It is important that multinational companies implement IPv6 migration soon enough as some countries have already started making plans for being IPv6 ready by next year, revealed Orange.
“Orange Business Services already has multiple years of IPv6 experience including customer implementations,” said Marc Blanchet, vice president Network Solutions (News - Alert) Business Unit, Orange Business Services. “Having IPv6 in our portfolio enables us to stimulate the global innovation environment by promoting wider deployment and use of IPv6.”
