Cavalier Unveils its Virtual Private LAN Service
By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor
Cavalier, specializing in providing telecommunications services throughout the eastern parts of the US, announced its Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). This service will combine the simplicity of Ethernet with the intelligence of IP and the inherent security of MPLS in Cavalier’s core fiber network.
VPLS is essentially a Layer 2 Ethernet service which meshes together the geographically dispersed LANs of customers resulting in a single-bridged Ethernet LAN enabling all sites to appear on the same network.
“This service satisfies some of the top IT priorities for our customers by offering simple and secure private networking at speeds from 1Mb to a Gigabit and higher,” said Lou Sommi, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Cavalier.
“Customers are already comfortable working with Ethernet. Now they can use it to connect their locations over Cavalier’s powerful fiber network to support increasingly complex applications,” added Sommi.
The new VPLS service includes features like predictable service levels where priority data is delivered in a reliable and timely manner. VPLS ensures flexible traffic flow planning by employing standard classes of service. This offers end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) required for mission critical applications like transaction processing, voice and video.
Customers’ will find the VPLS is fully contained within a dedicated Layer 2 switch domain with the routing done on the customers’ equipment itself ensuring optimum security. Rapid convergence time is made possible by meshing the service using MPLS in the core network. This ensures high availability and transmission of all applications.
Cavalier officials clarified that its VPLS service is scalable and customers can easily adapt to changing bandwidth and business requirements. This way services can grow without more labor-intensive configuration changes.
The service is flexible enough to allow one connection per site to be set up irrespective of how many locations or services are being used. This will enable customers to combine voice and multiple data applications on their network access options which include T1, Ethernet Express, DS3, SONET and Gigabit Ethernet, said Cavalier officials.
The company is a full-service provider of telecommunications solutions which are suitable for businesses, consumers and also government customers. It owns a fiber optic network which covers vast areas of eastern United States. Cavalier offers landline voice and managed network services to business customers.
