NEC Display Solutions Tweaks its Integrated PCs for Use in NEC Public Displays

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

NEC (News - Alert) Display Solutions has launched three new enhanced designs for its built-in PCs that can be connected to the NEC public displays via the Option Slot.

NEC Display Solutions benefits from the technological know-how and technologies of the NEC Corporation and, with its own research and development, is a manufacturer offering the widest product range of display solutions in the market.

The integrated PCs from NEC now consume less power and are tweaked to offer improved performance. These built-in PCs are said to be particularly ideal for use in airports, train stations, retail outlets, and within smaller presentation areas as they can be deployed without the need for any cabling and can run independently.

Alongside a new Intel (News - Alert) Celeron 1.2 processor-based model for use in light retail signage applications, NEC Display Solutions also offers a high end model running Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86 processor, which offers improved graphics performance. The company has also designed a system that runs on the Intel Atom processor with SSD (solid-state disk) for light signage apps and plans to offer it to the transport sector. All three new models support full-HD resolution, whilst the operating system remains Windows XP Embedded with the built-in PCs also continuing to maintain Linux-compatibility.

NEC has stated that the new models consume less than one tenth of the power used by a desktop PC and Intel Atom processor model needs no external cooling which elongates the lifetime of the integrated PCs. The system display can also be switched off while not in use to get even better power efficiency.

Ian Gobey, general manager of NEC Display Solutions, Middle East, said in a release that the market for digital signage at airports, bus stations, train stations, retail outlets and so on, has expanded rapidly within recent years, as operators realize that they can generate additional revenue streams by selling such advertising packages. They also use in-vehicle digital signage in trains, busses, taxis, and so on, to entertain passengers, display route information (such as time to destination) or convey branding/marketing messages relating to the carrier.

The NEC built-in PCs offer numerous additional connection options too. Three USB 2.0 ports are built to connect the models to other PC peripherals and the integrated Gigabit Ethernet port enables connection to the intranet and the internet. The ExpressCard slot also offers the possibility of accessing UMTS, WLAN or DVB-T, whilst connecting a second LCD display can also be easily accomplished using the DVI-I output port. Also there is internal RS232 interface that allows connections to the free NEC NaviSet Administrator Software for adjusting numerous display settings.

The NEC built-in PCs are available from August 2009 for various NEC public displays such as MULTEOS M40 and MULTEOS M46, NEC MultiSync LCD4020, MultiSync LCD4620 and MultiSync LCD5220, NEC MultiSync LCD6520, NEC MultiSync X461UN and NEC MultiSync X461HB.

NEC had recently announced the addition of two new wide-format color devices, MDview242-2 and MDview262-2.
