SureWest to Deploy Ethernet Solution from Adtran

By Divya Narain, TMCnet Contributor

Huntsville, Ala.-based access solutions provider Adtran, Inc. has announced that the Adtran Total Access 5000 Carrier Ethernet Access Platform and NetVanta 800 Series of intelligent Network Termination Units have been chosen by Northern California based integrated communications provider SureWest (News - Alert) Communications.

SureWest will employ the solutions from Adtran to deliver Ethernet services to business customers in its Sacramento, Calif. market. Last month, TMCnet had reported that SureWest has boosted symmetrical Internet speeds in Sacramento.

"SureWest selected Adtran's Ethernet access solution because of its ability to deliver Ethernet over TDM (EoTDM) services across existing network infrastructure," said Scott Barber, SureWest's VP and general manager of operations in California. "By placing the Total Access 5000 in appropriate points of presence within our network, we can offer Ethernet services ubiquitously across existing network infrastructure."

"We are pleased to be the Carrier Ethernet vendor for SureWest," said P. Steven Locke, VP of sales, service providers, Adtran Carrier Networks Division. "The flexibility of the Adtran Carrier Ethernet Access Platform fulfills an immediate need for EoTDM service delivery while providing a path to supporting future services."

The combination of Adtran Total Access 5000 and the NetVanta 800 NTUs offers a scalable Ethernet solution. By bonding together traditional TDM DS1 and DS3 circuits per the ITU-T G.998.2 standard, Adtran provides a low overhead, fault tolerant Ethernet over TDM alternative to MLPPP technologies.

Certified by MEF, Adtran’s Ethernet solution is equipped with traffic management, quality of service and measurement capabilities that allow carriers to offer SLA-based services to their end customers.

Verizon (News - Alert) purchased SureWest’s spectrum licenses and operating assets in January 2008 for $69 million.  Before uniting with Verizon Wireless, SureWest served the Northern California region for 90 years, with a range of offerings including advanced digital TV, high-speed Internet, Digital and traditional telephone, and wireless services. The company had a base of 50,000 wireless subscribers by the end of the third quarter last year.
