MetroCast to Use RCN Metro's 10 Gigabit Wavelength Service to Boost its Network Capacity

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

MetroCast Communications has entered into an agreement with RCN Metro Optical Networks to quadruple the capacity of MetroCast's (News - Alert) existing network in the Northeast. MetroCast will make use of RCN Metro's 10 Gigabit Wavelength Service in this agreement.

RCN (News - Alert) Metro provides a fully managed, private, point-to-point wavelength service over the company’s dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) network. According to the company, this service is suitable for overcoming access and capacity constraints. It eliminates the problem of initial capital investment, and increased operational and personnel expenses often incurred when deploying dark fiber solutions.

With the selection of RCN Metro for additional Wavelength transport service, MetroCast looks to shift to a more expansive private network with virtually unlimited capacity. The business and residential customers of the company will now get improved access to high-speed Internet, video and other communications services, states the company.

“We are pleased that we are expanding our relationship with MetroCast," said Felipe Alvarez (News - Alert), president of RCN Metro. “Our ability to understand our clients' needs and design a comprehensive solution that meets those needs is what sets us apart in the marketplace. Like MetroCast, RCN Metro has long served rural markets, and we strongly believe in the value of providing reliable, high-capacity solutions.”

MetroCast can now look to reduce the number of connections by installing RCN Metro's 10 Gigabit Wavelength Service. The company can now have a considerably improved transport capacity, which will the end user experience along with providing a more attractive environment for content delivery. The company looks to deliver the best video, Internet and phone service available with this agreement.

MetroCast had earlier selected RCN Metro Solution to expand its reach from Connecticut to New Hampshire, reduce Internet interconnection costs and boost bandwidth speed from an OC-48 (2.5 Gbps) to 10 Gbps. With this partnership, the company was looking to reduce the number of Internet Protocol providers needed to deliver bulk IP to an individual market with the help of RCN Metro’s 10 Gbps Wavelength Service.
