Procera Networks' Network Management Solution Chosen by Various Universities

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Since January 2009, more than 20 Universities in the United States have opted for PacketLogic family of products from Procera Networks, the company announced recently. The company believes that this growth indicates Procera’s dominance in the higher education market segment.

PacketLogic is a state-of-the-art deep packet inspection solution that offers an extensive feature-richness in the software modules LiveView, Filtering, Traffic Shaping, Statistics and WebStatistics. Starting from the entry-level 4 Mbps PL5600, the PacketLogic hardware platforms offer a range of configurations up to 2 GBPS PL7720. PacketLogic products give network managers access to relevant network traffic intelligence as fully integrated solutions.

Although the profiles of specific university vary, they all need to have accurately managed and controlled network traffic to maximize the substantial investment they've made in network infrastructure. These and other university networks around the world act as service providers to the academic and residential facilities across their campuses.

“Most Universities have issues balancing academic and recreational Internet usage, the amount of bandwidth required, by a growing number of sophisticated applications and students, can increase exponentially, impacting cost and quality of service,” said Jon Lindén, Procera's vice president of global marketing. “Procera's DPI products allow University network managers to shape network traffic and provide protection to the network and its users.”

Many universities claim that they could get various features and services that were not available on competing products. Universities need a robust and responsive product to manage their constantly changing network traffic landscape, and they believe that Procera’s solution provides them with such a solution.

Recently, the company announced that Spain-based Yoigo has deployed PacketLogic to offer new, prepaid Internet-to-Go services. Yoigo says that it has leveraged its successful postpaid mobile broadband offering to target an untapped segment of Internet customers. For Yoigo, this removes the uncertainty of not knowing the cost at the end of the month and the feeling of paying for something they might not fully utilize.
