RCN Metro Optical Network Completes Upgrade
By Divya Narain, TMCnet Contributor
RCN Metro Optical Networks has announced that the company has finished upgrading the access layer of its Ethernet network. The network now includes 10 Gigabit Metro Ethernet-based transports at several key locations. A division of RCN Corporation (News - Alert), RCN Metro Optical Networks has a proven track record in providing fiber optic-based network solutions.
Following the upgrade, RCN Metro will deliver a more robust network performance and lower levels of latency. Through the upgrade, RCN Metro will be able to fulfill the increasing customer demand for higher bandwidth. The additional 10 Gigabit Metro Ethernet at the access layer will provide RCN Metro customers greater scalability and quicker bandwidth expansion. Plus, there will be the benefit of the elimination of unnecessary propagation, which would in turn lead to reduced CPU cycles in the transfer of data from the access layer to the existing 10 Gigabit distribution and core layers. All this will further boost network performance and decreases network latency.
"While competitors may offer 10 Gigabit service at the access layer, they're still delivering it via costly DWDM or SONET technologies. With this latest upgrade, RCN Metro is pioneering the delivery of 10 Gigabit Metro Ethernet at the access layer," said Felipe Alvarez (News - Alert), President of RCN Metro. "This announcement illustrates RCN Metro's ongoing commitment to continually upgrade our network, ensuring that our customers experience the highest levels of performance and reliability through the most technologically advanced and cost-effective solutions available."
Having already upgraded six key locations from 1 Gigabit to 10 Gigabit, the company plans to upgrade a number of additional locations in its footprint by the end of the year.
RCN Metro boasts an extensive bouquet of services including: Ethernet, SONET, Wavelength, Video Transport, Internet and more. TMCnet recently reported that OpenCape Corporation has chosen RCN Metro as its network partner to build and operate a 300-mile fiber network across Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod.
