iSMART Consortium Successfully Tests DSM L3 Technology that Enhances VDSL2

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

ECI Telecom, a provider of communications platforms to carriers and service providers, and Actelis Networks, a company that develops and manufactures Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) over copper solutions, have reportedly completed the first successful customer tests of iSMART Consortium’s Dynamic Spectrum (News - Alert) Management Level 3 (DSM L3) technology.

The iSMART Consortium focuses on developing and commercializing DSM technology. ECI Telecom (News - Alert) and Actelis Networks are the founding members of the iSMART Consortium.

The testing on DSML3 was conducted by three Tier-1 operators, and has proven that iSMART Consortium’s DSM L3 technology practically eliminates crosstalk interference between twisted copper pairs so that the highest-speed DSL services can be more efficiently provided over longer distances in existing copper access loops.

With iSMART DSM L3, operators can leverage the VDSL2 technology to the maximum because it increases the reach of high-speed, high-value VDSL2 services, effectively multiplying the coverage area of VDSL2 equipment by a factor of 10 in some cases, officials added.

Most of the world’s existing access wireline infrastructure is still copper-based. The high cost of fiber to the home (FTTH) implementation has hindered widespread adoption of Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) or point-to-point fiber access networks.

Experts say that iSMART`s successful leveraging of DSM L3 technology makes VDSL a far more viable and cost effective choice for operators who are still not ready to migrate their access networks to full-fiber end-to-end FTTH systems.

DSM L3 technology could also enable operators to multiply the range and speed of VDSL2 equipment, resulting in significant change in the economics of high volume DSL traffic.

By taking advantage of existing infrastructure, operators who implement DSM technology can profitably provision more valuable high-speed broadband
services to residential and business customers.

“Today, we have truly revolutionized DSL with the world’s first demonstration of
the iSMART Consortium’s DSM L3 technology,” said Ido Shargil, chairman of the iSMART Consortium and head of system engineering at ECI Telecom. “We are addressing operators’ needs for increased competitiveness and cost-effectiveness in today’s challenging marketplace.”
