Alcatel-Lucent Debuts Next-Gen Wireline, Wireless Access Technologies
By Carolyn J Dawson TMCnet Contributor Officials from Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), a provider of solutions that deliver voice, data and video communication services to end-users, reportedly said that Long Term Evolution and next-generation passive optical networking technologies converge seamlessly for the delivery of the most demanding, high-speed broadband services.
Alcatel-Lucent recently demonstrated at its Paris demo center LTE's (News - Alert) capability to deal with multiple concurrent video streams and fast channel change. The LTE capability is complemented by a high-capacity 10G GPON backhaul solution for future-safe backhaul via fiber.
According to Philippe Keryer, president of Alcatel-Lucent's carrier activities, by introducing 10G GPON technology, officials wanted to show that Alcatel-Lucent continues to be a pioneer in broadband. At the same time, Alcatel-Lucent also wants to put a particular focus on 10G GPON's co-existence with its 2.5G predecessor. This is because it is important that the evolution to 10G GPON does not jeopardize current investments since approximately 60 to 70 percent of a PON investment relates to the service provider's outside plant.
Alcatel-Lucent develops cutting-edge technologies even before they get standardized. Even though the 10G GPON standards are still being ratified, the company shows it is ready to meet the request for higher capacities in its customers' access networks when required. Currently, Alcatel-Lucent is engaged in more than 95 FTTH projects around the world. Out of these, more than 80 are with GPON.
According to Jeff Heynen, directing analyst of broadband and video at Infonetics Research (News - Alert), two important long-term concerns for operators is that they don't want to strand their initial GPON investment, nor do they want to cut over existing subscribers. Alcatel-Lucent’s demonstration that 10G GPON is a viable upgrade path from current 2.5G deployments and also its ability to function in mixed GPON environments eliminates these concerns, Heynen said.
Alcatel-Lucent was positioned in the leader’s quadrant for the fiber-to-the-home space in Gartner's (News - Alert) latest FTTH Magic Quadrant assessment. The company offers fixed, mobile and converged broadband access, carrier and enterprise IP technologies, applications and services. It also has one of the largest research, technology and innovation organizations focused on communications and the most experienced global services team in the industry.
