United Utilities Deploys 23 REDCOM HDX Softswitches

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

REDCOM Laboratories has announced today that Alaska based United Utilities has deployed 23 REDCOM (News - Alert) High Density Exchange softswitches to take advantage of a new high-capacity digital microwave network serving western Alaska.

UUI provides regulated local exchange service in 60 rural Alaska communities. In addition to switched-access services, the company provides special access and transport for telemedicine, distance learning and government WAN services in rural Alaska.

The company is replacing the existing REDCOM Modular Digital Exchange switching systems with REDCOM HDX softswitches. REDCOM MDX has been in place for over 15 years.

“Our relationship with REDCOM is a longstanding one that began with our deployment of REDCOM’s MDX and MDXI platforms and now continues with our transition to the HDX, the company’s next-generation softswitch,” said Chuck Russell, senior vice president for operations and engineering at UUI.

With HDX softswitches, UUI’s network can now offer its customers next generation network services with the deployment of high-speed terrestrial 800 service backhaul. Also, the new HDX softswitches provide equal access and SS7 TCAP/ISUP signaling.

The HDX features extensive SIP trunking capabilities, according to REDCOM. This allows UUI to retrofit their network faster and cost-effectively than with legacy long-distance transport. With HDX, migrating to IP is easy, said REDCOM officials. Moreover, the HDX supports ISDN and SS7 connectivity, providing the out-of-band trunk signaling necessary for network CLASS features.

And as the Alaska region grows, UUI said that it’s well-positioned with the network’s new HDX softswitches to rapidly create and deliver new revenue-generating services.

“Powered by 23 Carrier-Class REDCOM HDX softswitches, our network is able to keep pace with the increasing regional demand that we are seeing for new, emerging services,” Russell said.

Victor, N.Y.-based REDCOM specializes in the design and manufacture of telecommunications products. The company’s products provide customers with public and private network systems, ISDN systems, integrated TDM and VoIP systems, transportable systems, programmable systems, and test equipment.

In May, Digital Communications Services installed a REDCOM HDX switch for Clarksville Mutual Telephone Company in Marshall, Ill.
