BridgeWave's FlexPort Wireless Radios Comply with European R&TTE Directive

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Gigabit wireless systems provider BridgeWave Communications announced that its FlexPort 80 GHz TDM+IP multi-gigabit wireless links have received notified body expert opinion validating its performance to conform to the European Radio and telecommunications Terminal Equipment, or “R&TTE,” Directive 1999/5/EC.

European R&TTE Directive covers essential requirements for safety, RF exposure, electromagnetic compatibility and radio spectrum, which are the necessary fulfilling factors for placing the product on the European market. The R&TTE directive covers all radio equipment and all equipment intended to be connected to public telecommunications networks.

Officials with BridgeWave (News - Alert) said that its FlexPort millimeter wave product is the second product in the family to receive the European Telecommunications Standards Institute certification.

According to BridgeWave, its FlexPort platform is ideal for cost-effective upgrades of existing networks, or green-field rollouts for backhaul of 4G mobile networks. It is a family of high-capacity 80 GHz radio systems that carries both TDM and IP traffic natively without other third party devices. Operators can not only combine their 4G backhaul needs with their existing backhaul networks, but also facilitates carriers to migrate to next generation networks on their own timeline.

Moreover, FlexPort’s advanced radio features and network management functionality are specifically designed for dense cell deployments that will be required by next generation networks.

Compliance Certification Services tested FlexPort 80 GHz wireless links, BridgeWave officials said.

CCS is a NVLAP-accredited Electro Magnetic Compatibility Test Laboratory, which provides compliance and test services on cutting edge wireless standards, such as the ETSI (News - Alert) requirements for 70 GHz and 80 GHz wireless links.

“As European carriers and mobile operators migrate to next generation LTE (News - Alert) and 4G technologies, gigabit wireless links will play a crucial role in the backhaul of these networks,” said Michael Heckrotte, director of Engineering at CCS, in a statement. “BridgeWave’s FlexPort product was designed with the needs of these next generation networks in mind. European regulators and operators can be assured that as tested, FlexPort80 meets the stringent ETSI requirements for wireless performance and safety.”

“FlexPort is the first millimeter wave system to include frequency agility based on the ECC REC 05/07 recommendations and the first tunable and channelized 80 GHz system to conform to ETSI standards,” Amir Makleff, president and CEO, BridgeWave, said in a statement.

BridgeWave also demonstrated compliance of its Gigabit Ethernet 80 GHz systems with the ETSI Draft Recommendation EN 302 217-3 V1.3.1, last year. The company’s point-to-point wireless links are deployed worldwide in mainstream enterprise, government and service provider networks,
